An early flowering of the iron industry began in India around 2000 BCE. The Qutub column near Delhi consists of almost chemically pure pig iron. It was forged from individual iron blocks. It dates from the ninth century BCE; the weight of the column is 17,000 kg, its length is about 16 m. Up to now, there are no signs of corrosion.
