摘要
This article presents the holdings of the Historical Picture Archive of the Archive and Museum Foundation (AMS) of the United Evangelical Mission (VEM) as well as its eventful history of cataloguing. In addition, the developments in the use and function of the medium „image“ in the mission work of the VEM will be presented on the basis of the photographic image stock and discussed with regard to the work mission to which the AMS has been committed since its foundation. Photographs are particularly relevant in this context, as their technical production methods meant that they were regarded as a supposedly objective form of representation, which seemed to be suitable for truthfully visualising missionary work and providing Europeans with authentic information about the way of life and culture of the respective peoples to be missionised.
