Nonlinear problems occur when searching for zeros or minimising a given function. In one-dimensional situations, generalisations of the bisection method lead to numerical approximation methods. In multidimensional problems, search or descent directions can be constructed using gradients of the function and lead to the Newton and gradient methods.
