One approach to the approximate representation of functions on computers is the approximation with polynomials that pass through given interpolation points. The resulting approximation error can be represented and bounded with the help of the mean value theorem. By adding further interpolation conditions or optimising the choice of interpolation points, the approximation quality can be improved.
