This chapter discusses the emergence of religions from the earliest beginnings in the Stone Age, when natural events were associated with personalized gods, through the first cultural developments with increasingly differentiated images of gods, to the opulent world of gods in ancient India with its many hundreds of gods, who mostly embodied specific characteristics and had very human traits—similar to ancient Egypt and also in the Pantheon, the heaven of gods of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In addition, this chapter presents the development of religions from polytheism to the monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
