Around so-called midlife, which is around the age of 40, many personality traits, many partnership, family, and also friendship relationships have stabilized. Naturally, this is also related to the external living conditions. Midlife is often a time for crisis-ridden developments, because stagnation threatens here and the transience of life becomes more consciously perceived. This causes fear and often motivates changes. There are developments in both directions: If one has thought too much about one’s own advancement and is too little embedded in supportive groups, a more collective and connected way of life is often sought. On the other hand, if one has long hidden in “one’s” groups, that is, feared one’s own path of individual life design, then the psyche usually also demands to reduce this one-sidedness in favor of a more delineated and self-consistent way of life. We look at how differently singles and couples can experience this.
