The theoretical basis of the research project “The Visceral Novel Reader: A Cultural History of Embodied Novel Reading in Britain, 1688–1927” (2019–2023), headed by Monika Class, is built upon two main pillars that employ aspects of French existential and hermeneutic phenomenology of the twentieth century. The first pillar draws on crucial elements of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s (1908–1961) definition of the lived body that enables and shapes sensorimotor experiences. The second pillar is based on Paul Ricœur’s (1913–2005) triple mimesis model encompassing a trifold cycle of prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration that illuminates the complex interaction between narrative and readers (Ricoeur, Time 1: 53).
