It was a terribly hot day in the summer. I was on the late shift and I remember well that I sincerely sympathized with the colleagues on the peripheral wards—there was no air conditioning there, but we had it in the intensive care unit. I was pregnant with my first child, due to be born in the fall. At that time, it was not common for pregnant women to be able to take on administrative tasks—so I worked normally at the patient’s bedside. We were a young team on this late shift—besides me, there were four other colleagues—who actively supported me and took over the tasks that I could not or did not want to take on due to the pregnancy. The afternoon promised to be quiet. It was a pleasant shift, we were not fully occupied and the patients were for the most part not demanding to care for.
