Nucleotides, the building blocks of RNA, consist of two types of organic compounds: D-ribose and nucleobases. The four nucleobases on which the RNA structure is grounded are the pyrimidine bases such as uracil and cytosine and the purine bases such as adenine and guanosine. Today, almost all scientists agree in that the DNA based on 2′-deoxyribose is a later invention of the evolution, following the earlier invention of RNA. The first primitive species of living organisms were capable of self-reproduction without containing DNA (such as the archaea still today). Hence, this chapter is focused on the discussion of those model experiments that contributed to a better understanding of the origin of RNA.
