The questions, if and how life has emerged via chemical evolution (CE) requires at first a definition of the goal of the evolution, a definition of life. However, in this regard, the Austrian writer A. Schnitzler was extremely skeptic and wrote: “Was Leben ist, vermag kein Wissenschaftler zu sagen” (No scientist is able to define the meaning of life). Nonetheless, numerous scientists have attempted to find a definition for the phenomenon called life, and the author is not ambitious to present a new definition, but prefers to present a short summary of the various attempts made by renowned scientists and philosophers.
