When working in electrophysiology, a well thought-out recording setup is essential. Regardless of whether the setup already exists or has to be built from scratch, it is always advantageous to know the individual technical elements required for the planned patch clamp recordings from the ground up. This chapter therefore discusses the general components of a patch clamp rig and the basic function of each piece of equipment. It also introduces the different types and explains what to look out for when buying and installing them. It is often useful to build or adapt certain parts yourself—this is also covered in this chapter.
