Building a Bridge between Design for Six Sigma and TRIZ

Design for Six Sigma (DfSS) is an important and proven methodological approach for the development of robust products and is used at both system and subsystem or component level. The core idea of Design for Six Sigma is to develop products from the very beginning in such a way that they are later robust in series production and achieve Six Sigma quality. A major focus is also placed on the definition (elicitation), fulfillment and verification of customer and stakeholder requirements. In the early phase of concept development, DfSS methods such as the Boundary Diagram support the creation of the system architecture. This paper uses an example to show how the quality of the Boundary Diagram can be significantly improved with the help of TRIZ methods and how risks and failures can be identified even before real prototypes are created. This example is intended to illustrate how a bridge can be built between the two methodological approaches and the benefits that can arise.
