Infections of the port system are a feared complication and often lead to explantation of the device. Patients frequently present with numerous predisposing risk factors, such as immunosuppression and malignant tumors. A large proportion of these nosocomial wound infections can be prevented through appropriate preventive measures. The hands of medical personnel play a central role as a common vehicle of transmission. However, instrument reprocessing and skin antisepsis are also essential components of a comprehensive hygiene strategy. Based on current national and international guidelines, we provide an overview of evidence-based perioperative hygiene measures.
