The Latin name for slow worm is Anguis fragilis, which could roughly be translated as ‘fragile snake’. This is somewhat of a misnomer, though, as it’s not a snake but a legless lizard. And despite also going by the name of blindworm or deaf adder, it is neither deaf nor blind, only colourblind. However, ‘colourblindworm’ would be a truly odd name, indeed!
