Lichens are a prime example of symbiosis. One or more algae and one or more fungi team up to form a lichen, allowing them both to exist in an environment that neither would be able to inhabit on their own. The photographs on these pages only show species that occur on trees in our garden. Yet lichens can also live on bare rock, high up in the mountains, in deserts, on permafrost and even in the sea.
