Two wild bees were feasting on the last Scabiosa of summer, when the rain arrived. With these October temperatures, insects are already quite lethargic, but completly soaked, they can’t move an inch, so the poor little things weren’t able to leave the flowerheads. As bees are foraging specialists, it’s possible that the ones pictured were in desperate need of the particular nectar that only scabious flowers provide. That’s why they put up with the inconvenience of rain, water droplets and other discomforts in order to be straight back at the food source as soon as the water evaporates.
