A chorus of toads
摘要
In the early years in our garden, the chorus of the frogs and tree frogs was clearly audible. Although the small natural pond was some distance from the house, we sometimes only managed to sleep with the windows closed, as the nocturnal croakings of these amphibians could be very, very loud indeed. In the last year, a different, softer voice joined the nightly frog concerto, which we initially couldn’t place. Was it a bird? Or a wounded mammal of some kind? No, this gentle call came from toads, more precisely, from the fire-bellied toad.
