When dealing with Kierkegaard’s religious philosophy the issue of the relation between religion and politics needs to be explored. This is a contentious issue, as Kierkegaard vehemently distanced himself from contemporary politics, but nonetheless provided insightful reflections on the relation between religion and politics that inspired further debates. Throughout the reception history some authors emphasized the apolitical elements in Kierkegaard’s religious philosophy while others argued that his social criticism contains elements that can be used productively when reflecting on politics. I examine Kierkegaard’s conception of the formation of social and political life on the basis of four models of social engagement that I have identified in the treatise The Single Individual. Their analysis will show that Kierkegaard’s goal is not only to criticize negative dynamics of modern politics but also to stimulate efforts aimed at their correction and at a positive formation of social and political life.
