Self-leadership means that employees decide for themselves what they do, why they do something, and also how they want to approach certain goals. Self-leadership cannot usually replace traditional leadership by managers. They are rather very important to enable self-leadership in organizations in the first place. In this chapter, we describe the development of the concept of self-leadership in science, whether and under what circumstances self-leadership is the right choice, and what leaders, teams, and organizations can do to bring self-leadership to life.
