Leadership in academia is challenging and complex. At the same time, effective leadership is a key success factor for research teams. Ethics-oriented leadership can increase the motivation and performance of employees, while destructive leadership behavior usually has a negative impact. This chapter provides an overview of research on ethics-oriented and destructive leadership in academia and practical, evidence-based recommendations for promoting leadership competencies in research and teaching institutions.
