This chapter first discusses what constitutes difficult leadership situations and difficult employees and how typical destructive interaction patterns can develop. Afterward, empirical findings characterizing difficult leadership situations based on the DIAMONDS characteristics and dealing with these situations are presented. The chapter concludes with recommendations for leadership practice, which among other things, relate to dealing with negative emotions, questioning techniques, conducting criticism discussions, and disciplinary options.
