“Authentic leadership” describes the behavior and characteristics of leaders who interact with others in a sincere and transparent manner, have a good self-knowledge regarding their strengths and weaknesses, have internalized moral values and behave congruently to these. This chapter first summarizes the theoretical foundations and the evidence from previous research on authentic leadership and its effects. Subsequently, measures for promotion and tips for the practical implementation of authentic leadership are presented. Finally, two instruments are discussed that can be used to measure the extent of authentic leadership and thus to evaluate corresponding training programs for leaders.
