In Chap. 4 we proposed to approach the term “paleomagnetism” in a classical etymological way first. A similar approach to explain the term “rock magnetism” may seem less suitable as an introduction to this chapter. Rock and magnetism—both words, individually or combined, seem to describe exactly the topic we have extensively dealt with in Chap. 3.
