Potentials in the dimensioning of brake components in BEVs

The electrification of the powertrain in motor vehicles has a significant influence on the chassis. An essential component of the chassis is the braking system. The ability of the drivetrain to recover kinetic energy during braking reduces the load on the hydraulic brake system and minimizes their use to infrequent driving situations. The current load spectrum for the design of brake systems is oriented towards conventional drive systems, so that recuperation is not yet taken into account. The purpose of this paper is to develop a proposal for a new load spectrum for BEV based on vehicle measurements, taking recuperation into account. To this end, the actual friction braking fraction in BEV will be investigated by looking at the brake-specific characteristics. Subsequently, the vehicle data is normalized for vehicle lifetime and statistically evaluated. Finally, the new load spectrum will be derived and discussed. This analysis contributes to a resource-efficient and cost-optimized design of the brake system in vehicles with electric drivetrains and shows an approach for avoiding oversizing of the brake system in customer operation.
