Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm: Educational proverbs in the Langenscheidt dictionary
摘要
Proverbs play a significant role in foreign language learning, as they enrich cultural understanding and language expression. German learners often rely on dictionaries, including proverbs, to precisely define words in a context. As an apple falls close to the tree, proverbs are also closely associated with dictionaries as the medium that captures them. The main focus of this article is to find proverbs in the Dictionary of German “Langenscheidt Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache”, their meanings, and illustrations in an educational context. This study used the filtering method to identify and select proverbs in the Langenscheidt dictionary. The results indicate that this dictionary presents dozens of German proverbs. Additionally, the proverbs presented exhibit significant variations in expressions. However, the dictionary has yet to consistently mention proverbial terms and explanations of meanings, making it reasonably confusing for readers. This research provides new insights into the complexity of presenting proverbs in dictionaries, where variations in expressions and term ambiguities often arise.
