Judgment Ability

In addition to the characteristics of psychiatric disorders, the ability to judge must be considered in the psychopathological examination, if only because of its importance for consent to examination and treatment. Impairment of judgment is a common consequence of various psychiatric syndromes; that is, a number of psychopathological dimensions affect a person’s insight, (1) the ability to assess a situation—for example, the group of formal and content-related thought disorders, affective exceptional situations, attention and working memory disorders, consciousness disturbances, etc. Furthermore, there are psychiatric effects (2) on the ability to express the assessment appropriately.
