For oculoplastic findings such as larger eyelid tumors, xanthelasma and ectropion, a slightly larger image section is important. We prefer to use a −6 D additional lens in conjunction with the slit lamp magnification 5× or 8× for videography in oculoplastics at an examination distance of about 25 cm (i.e., two and a half times the image diagonal). For binocular overviews, we extend the examination distance to 50 cm and use a −8 D hand held lens. We also use this extension of the focal plane of the slit lamp to “scan” image material brought by the patient (possibly also from their smartphone display) with the slit lamp. This allows us to include in the imaging long past recordings from earlier times, which is often very informative in oculoplastic and strabological questions.
