Eyes

Dragonflies look through several tens of thousands of tiny tubular individual eye cells. The Blue Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) has around 30,000, visible here as tiny dots that work together as compound eyes. The eyes meet at the front and top of the head. This gives them the best all-round vision and a high temporal resolution (about 7 to 10 times better than in humans). Dragonflies therefore see as we might do with our camera in slow motion.
