In this chapter, we will not yet solve any specific contact problems. Instead, we want to lay the fundamental basis for the following chapters, and briefly discuss some fundamental aspects of plane contact problems. This concerns the distinction between plane strain and plane stress configurations, the fundamental solution for line loading of an elastic half-space, the indeterminacy of macroscopic displacements in plane contact problems, and the general determination of the elastic stress state below the surface.
