Cryoballoon-based atrial fibrillation ablation is recommended as well as radiofrequency ablation in the current guidelines for atrial fibrillation therapy and is established as a standard procedure in the clinical practice of many centers. Through a systematic approach, a safe, simplified, and often permanent pulmonary vein isolation can be achieved. This review article provides a practical guide for all the steps of a cryoballoon-based pulmonary vein isolation and also considers pre-procedural preparation as well as post-interventional follow-up. Both cryoballoon systems currently available on the market are presented.
