Attackers increasingly use smart home Internet of Things (IoT) devices for criminal activities, such as creating botnets, spying, robbery, and theft. Rapid countermeasures and support for digital investigations in the smart home area are essential. Our contribution provides an overview of the types of devices currently being researched, including (1) Smart Speakers and Voice Assistants, (2) Wearables, and (3) Smart Things. Preparatory measures have been identified, such as knowledge of potential digital evidence (PDE) sources and evidence data categories, user(s), device(s), and communication. The paper also outlines extraction approaches for IoT devices in smart homes, including manual, logical, and physical methods. These findings serve as a basis for discussing and comparing current advances in IoT device forensics by category, leading to the extraction of a taxonomy, challenges, and open future work directions. As the use of smart home IoT devices continues to expand, it is crucial to systematize knowledge to enhance the quality of forensic investigations proactively. This paper offers valuable insights into device forensics and provides a roadmap for future research.
