One of the authors (H.‐D. Barke) was invited to give a slide presentation about Germany in San Diego, California. In a picture book titled , he found many beautiful views, including of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen in Bavaria. Knowing that Americans enjoy such sights, he projected this image first. As soon as it was visible, a lady loudly interrupted: “Beautiful – like our castle in Disneyland.” The speaker wanted to correct her: “In Disneyland there is a copy of the castle, this photo shows the original near Füssen in Bavaria” – but the lady wasn't listening. The difference between the original and the model was not that important to her! In the given example, the original and both models can essentially be compared: Both the photo of the castle and the model castle in Disneyland can be examined in detail against the Bavarian original. In the natural sciences, models of chemical structures such as crystal lattices or molecular models cannot be compared with the submicroscopic originals, because these are fundamentally not visible – neither with a magnifying glass nor with a microscope. It is reflected on how scientific models and model conceptions are developed and used for understanding chemistry.
