The history of chemistry is so interesting and exciting for lecturers and insiders of chemistry that it seems sensful to also give students of chemistry teaching an initial overview of important historical stages of knowledge in chemistry. Given the particular difficulties in successfully teaching and learning chemistry, it should also be instructive to understand processes of knowledge in the history of chemistry in order to possibly take them into account in current teaching and instruction. For example, if one studies how the understanding of acids, bases, and salts increased dramatically after 1887 with the insights of Arrhenius into the concept of ions, one suspects that the concept of ions also has central importance in our chemistry teaching and that ions should be introduced early on — and should not be paraphrased with “formula units” or “assembly groups”. The following pages provide an initial overview using a beam of historical dates that depicts historical personalities and describes their insights with a few keywords. Political events are also mentioned to outline connections to world history. However, the actual intention is to motivate readers to study the elaborated chapters that are located in the electronic appendix of the German book (http://www.springer.com/de/book/978-3-662-56491-2):
