In contrast to an experiment, in which the influencing variables are planned and controlled by the experimenter and the conclusions generally refer to an infinite hypothetical population, we speak of a survey when the state of a population of individuals or objects with a given characteristic structure is recorded. Surveys are mainly carried out in economic and social statistics as well as in medicine.
