Data is fundamental for modelling technical processes and production steps. Following a short historical review, the chapter introduces ways to describe data and to characterize it. Structured, semi-structured and unstructured data are discussed and their relevance in common applications is explained. All necessary concepts are reviewed from the perspective of building models from this data.
