In addition to atrial fibrillation and other supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular tachycardias are at the central focus of cardiology and rhythmology. Since these forms of tachycardias are often hemodynamically significant, their detection and treatment play an important role in the prevention of sudden cardiac death. Both in prevention of the often underlying structural heart disease as well as in therapy of the arrhythmias, important new aspects have emerged in recent years. The ICD therapy has undergone significant changes both in terms of the available defibrillators and the programming. For the often only possible therapy—catheter ablation—new imaging procedures are available, which help to optimize therapy. Also, the understanding of the mechanisms of VT as well as the effectiveness of the treatment could be improved by new catheter and mapping technologies, making catheter ablation available for more patients with a higher effectiveness.
