Cardiac tumors are rare, can be benign or malignant, and can occur as primary tumors or metastases. Depending on their location, cardiac tumors can cause a variety of symptoms and mimic cardiac diseases. Echocardiography is of paramount importance in primary diagnostics. The prognosis of benign heart tumors is usually good; the prognosis of malignant cardiac tumors, however, is poor even with surgical resection. The first description of a cardiac neoplasm was made by Realdo Colombo and dates back to the year 1559. The incidence of primary heart tumors is low and is reported in autopsy reports to be 0.0017—0.28%. Cardiac and pericardial tumors are pathologically-anatomically divided into benign congenital tumors, benign acquired tumors, germ cell tumors, and malignant tumors (Overview 1) (Burke and Tavaro, J Thorac Oncol 11:441–452, 2016). The proportion of benign tumors is stated to be 75–90%.
