This book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the history, use, and effects of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline, three purine alkaloids found in common beverages and foods such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and mate tea. Initially, an attempt is made to explain the worldwide popularity of caffeine, which is consumed in coffee, tea, and energy drinks. It is mentioned that caffeine chemically belongs to the purine alkaloids and acts similarly to theobromine and theophylline. Theobromine is primarily found in chocolate, theophylline primarily in tea. Furthermore, the historical development of coffee consumption is described, which originated in the Arab world and later reached Europe, where it was initially a luxury beverage. Tea also played an important role as a pleasure and medicinal drink, especially in Asia and South America. The cultural significance of cocoa in South America is also highlighted, where it was highly valued by the indigenous people and used as a means of payment. The book chapter also addresses the medical significance of caffeine, particularly its use in the treatment of asthma and as a stimulant. It discusses how caffeine chemically resembles DNA building blocks and has often been used for performance enhancement throughout history. Interestingly, the history of sildenafil (Viagra) and its unexpected discovery as a remedy for erectile dysfunction is also covered, demonstrating how medical research sometimes leads to unexpected results. Overall, the chapter offers a detailed presentation of the chemical properties of caffeine and related substances, their historical and cultural significance, as well as their medical use and effects on the human body.
