  • Oliver Kayser

摘要

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the history and development of morphine and other opiates. After an initial overview of the various opiates, their chemical structures and effects, the history of the pure substance since its discovery is presented in detail. A particular focus is on morphine as a strong painkiller and its historical significance in science and society. The history of morphine is told through the life story of Friedrich Sertürner, a pharmacy assistant in Paderborn at the beginning of the 19th century. His work led to significant developments in medicine, particularly in pain therapy. The book chapter traces the development of opiate research and application and explains the importance of morphine for medical science. The challenges and dangers associated with the use and abuse of opiates are also discussed. Important events in the history of opiates, such as the Opium Wars in China and the development of synthetic opiates, are presented in detail. The author also describes the advances in the structural elucidation of morphine and other natural substances, as well as the role of modern techniques such as NMR and mass spectrometry in chemical research. Overall, the chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the history, development, and significance of morphine and opiates in medicine and science.
