The history of reactor technology has accompanied humans since their first tool developments and cultural actions. The first written records of material transformations are known from high cultures in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. Process knowledge was transferred from Alexandria via Damascus, Baghdad, and Spain to Europe and developed there during the Middle Ages into a flourishing era in ore and metal processing as well as the textile industry. Industrialization created a demand for inorganic products, while the emerging coal tar chemistry enabled a multitude of organic compounds. Reactor technology developed with larger production volumes, as well as technical possibilities of high pressures and temperatures. From 1850 to 1940, many new technologies were introduced, which have been optimized to this day. Digital technologies and renewable raw materials will determine future development.

摘要
