The supply chain is defined to generate a better understanding of the overall system, in which process optimization will take place. Optimisation is always possible and numerous different methods are known for supply chain and operations. Therefore, the essential features of current improvement approaches are characterised, and their advantages and disadvantages are evaluated. These approaches include Lean Production, Supply Chain Management, Six Sigma, and the Theory of Constraints. The essential content is presented for each approach.
