This article presents a case-study that explores the usage of different types of examples in an a-level philosophy course. The theoretical framework refers to a quartet of logical-epistemological functions of examples in contexts of philosophical practice proposed by Klaiber which has not yet been tested in real learning settings. Using the approach of design research in this explorative study conducted in context of North-Rhine-Westphalian university teacher training these example types were adapted to educational material exemplifying Paul Feyerabend’s philosophical theory of cultural relativism. In a small sample field study (N = 25) the views of students on these examples were collected and analysed using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. While overall the explorative results demand critical reflection and further research they yet indicate student preferences with view to example usage and identify possible criteria for ‘good’ examples.

摘要
