Unmanned Moon Missions - From Cosmic Proximity

The Moon is the only celestial body that we can observe details of with the naked eye from Earth without the use of tools. The opposite perspective – what does the Earth look like from the Moon – has long occupied authors of astronomical depictions of both scientific and utopian nature. Until the beginning of the space age more than 60 years ago, one had to be content with speculations; only after that could this question be answered. The only certainty was the size of the Earth in the lunar sky: Since the Earth is three and a half times larger than the Moon and the Moon has an apparent diameter of 0.5 degrees as seen from Earth, our home planet appears to be about 1.9 degrees large from a lunar perspective.
