MR Neurography in Compression Syndromes of Peripheral Nerves

The traditional gold standard in the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies is the clinical examination, supplemented by the electrophysiological methods of electromyography and neurography. Specialized imaging of peripheral nerves using methods of MR neurography and nerve sonography has gained widespread acceptance in primary and follow-up diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies in recent years. Particularly in the exact localization diagnosis, high-resolution imaging methods can play to their strengths, especially when lesion sites and patterns cannot be precisely or accurately enough delimited with clinical-neurophysiological methods. MR neurography is characterized by a particularly strong lesion contrast in spontaneous and non-spontaneous neuropathies and polyneuropathies and a spatial resolution that allows the fascicular fine structure of peripheral nerves to be depicted.
