Regression analysis is a collection of statistical modeling techniques that usually describes the behavior of a random variable of interest by using one or more quantitative variables. The variable of interest may be the crop yield, the price of oil in the world market, the tensile strength of metal wire, and so on. This variable of interest is called the dependent variable, or response variable and denoted with Y. Other variables which are thought to provide information on the dependent variable are incorporated into the model as independent variables.
