The concept of regression originated from genetics and the word regression was introduced into statistical literature in the published paper by Sir Francis Galton on the relationship between the stature of children and their parents. The relationship was found to be approximately linear with an approximate gradient of 2∕3, and this suggested that very tall parents tend to have children shorter than themselves and vice-versa.
