A familiar problem in analysing data is the occurrence of one or more values in a data set which appear to the analyst, (who thus makes an individual subjective judgment), to be inconsistent or out of line with the rest of the data, relative to the probability model—call it F—assumed for the data. Such a surprising value is called an outlying observation or outlier.
