Margin of error is a term that probably originated in the popular reporting of results of public opinion polls but has made its way into more professional usage. It usually represents half of the length of a confidence interval (most usually a 95% confidence interval, though it could in theory be any confidence interval) for a proportion or percentage, calculated under the assumption of simple random sampling.
