Many clinical trials have the objective of showing equivalence between two treatments, usually a test treatment under development and an existing reference treatment. In such studies the aim is no longer to detect a difference, as in the case when comparing a new treatment with placebo, but to demonstrate that the two active treatments are equivalent within a priori stipulated acceptance limits.
