This chapter provides a contextual perspective of empirical software engineering, starting from a definition of software engineering. The chapter continues with a discussion of the software process and the need for continuous adaptation and improvement. It concludes with a discussion of science in software engineering. A brief background of the evolution of empirical software engineering is provided.
